Weekend in Amsterdam

How To Spend A Weekend In Amsterdam, Netherlands

When you decide to visit Amsterdam, Netherlands for the weekend, you might be a little apprehensive about some of the controversial things you have heard about the younger crowds and the smoke parlors, but spending a weekend in Amsterdam is wonderful and there are plenty of things for all ages, including all kinds of nightlife. Whether you like the historic buildings or the fun and carnival atmosphere, you are sure to enjoy your time there.

van-gogh-museum

Of course, for the history buffs, you can visit the Anne Frank House or the Van Gogh museum and for artwork, the Rijksmuseum. There are many interesting things to see and do, if you like the artistic or historic side of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and these are just a few of the more popular museums. Close to the Rijksmuseum is the Heineken Brewery and Museum, which is historic in its own right and worth the visit.

beer

A trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands isn't complete without touring the Heineken Brewery because not only do you get plenty of free beer to try, but they also give you a free souvenir gift after the two hour tour of the brewery, which goes into the history of making beer and the company. It's fun for everybody, even if you aren't a beer drinker because you can take a beer wagon trip through Amsterdam, which is fun for the children.

You can enjoy a picnic lunch at Vondelpark, which is a green oasis close to the downtown area and close to the museums. It is also fun to go on the Hop On, Hop Off Canal Cruises that they offer sightseeing tours of the most popular spots around the city and you can visit a number of them and shop during the day. Actually, if you are hungry, you can enjoy a 3 hour dinner tour that includes a gourmet dinner, including appetizers, main courses, desserts, wines and beer, along with the best view of the canals, bridges and canal houses along the Amstel Canal's banks, which has been called the Venice of the North.

For an after dinner walking tour that incorporates the heart of the historic city with the best views of the theatre and flea-market districts, go to the Magere Brug, which is a footbridge that was constructed in the 17th century that connects the canals to the theatre district. This skinny bridge has 1200 lights on it, making it the perfect, romantic place to walk in the evening because you can see the lights reflecting off the canal water and it is a pedestrian bridge, so you don't have to worry about the car and bus traffic. It occasionally has to be opened up for the big boats to go through, which is interesting to watch.

To get some rest, the best accommodations are the great holiday apartments that you can book online. You can choose from the more luxurious holiday apartments on the Amstel Canal, that are close to fine dining and nightclubs or the ethnically-designed, budget holiday apartments online that are closer to the local nightlife scene. Of course, you can't forget that Amsterdam, Netherlands is known for the clubs and bars, so they are worth a visit during the late night hours, when you're not sleeping.
