Amsterdam in winter

Winter is Amazing in Amsterdam

The people of Amsterdam are a hardy, ingenious and friendly.  You can experience it for yourself during visits when Amsterdammers will go out of their way to help tourists and locals alike.  You will see it from their canals, windmills and other amazing places of interest.

You will believe it when winter comes and you find evidence of the Amsterdammers' success in adapting to the cold, dark and wet weather for three whole months from December to February.  In fact, February is the coldest and December is wettest month of the year, no thanks to the cold winds blowing in from the sea.

 No Regrets

Still, you will not regret coming to Amsterdam in winter.  The trick is in making sure that you pack the right kind of winter gear, adopt the right kind of approach to the winter activities and make the right holiday apartment reservations. You will find great Apartments in Amsterdam online.

You want a warm bed during the early mornings when the cold is at its, well, coldest.  In this case, you must book your holiday apartment ahead of time via an online reservations site.  You can enjoy very low rentals precisely because winter is not exactly the peak tourist season in the city.

But that is where other tourists are missing out on the fun.  Amsterdam still has plenty to offer in terms of activities, sights and sounds that it is often hard to believe that you are in the middle of winter.  Many call it the Winter Wonderland of Amsterdam and for good reasons, too.

 Winter Wonderland in the City

In December, Amsterdam takes on the quintessential atmosphere of a winter wonderland.  The ground is covered in snow, perfect for making snow angels while outdoor bodies of water freeze just enough to host a good number of ice skaters.  And the lights make you want to believe that Santa Claus' mythical North Pole residence has just taken root in the city, with said lights strung all over the streets and canals as well as on homes and shops.

This is Christmas in Amsterdam!  Your cultural calendar will be full of all sorts of activities from shopping to watching concerts and everything else in between.  It seems that winter may be hibernation time in other areas of the world but not so in Amsterdam.  Well, except on Christmas Day itself and the Second Christmas Day when all the shops are closed and people stay in their homes to celebrate.

Aside from the winter holidays like Sinterklaasavond, Christmas and Tweede as well as New Year's Eve and New' Year's Dayk, you will also enjoy the Chinese New Year Celebrations, the Jumping Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Fashion Week, to name a few.  The place is just jumping with activities, indeed.

So, this winter, to get the feel of how the Dutch celebrate the winter season, go to Amsterdam.  It is a trip worth making even when others see it as way to retreat to warmer climates.  After all, the Amsterdammers have proudly stood by their city and continue to invite visitors to see for themselves the reasons why.  You have no reason to snub such a warm invitation to visit Amsterdam in winter!
